12:00 PM - 1:30 PM Effective Online-Advising: Best Practices for Improved Communication & Connection
Due to decreasing budgets and increasing demands from students for more online support services, advisors are faced with serving more students online. Advising students through a variety of modalities can be challenging due to the fact that online and campus-based students often face common limitations and barriers. In addition, advisors run the risk of eliminating some of the developmental advising strategies that are critical to effective advising as they attempt to manage a seemingly unmanageable amount of emails and phone calls. This session will address essential components of successful online advising: building rapport and trust, assessing and anticipating student needs, providing information and support, reducing fears, and facilitating a sense of connectedness. Even though the use of technology is essential for providing online advising services, it inevitably breeds some issues, such as confidentiality and security, connectivity, and clarity of the information exchanged. The presenter will address these issues by presenting real-life examples and participants will be encouraged to provide input and feedback.

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM HEB Quest for the Best
Hosted by UHV SBDC and UHV, this informational meeting on HEB Primo Picks: Quest for the Best is an opportunity to learn more about this program and ask questions. The Primo Picks: H-E-B Quest for Texas Best, is an open call for local, small, minority-, veteran-, disabled- and woman-owned food and beverage (non-alcoholic) suppliers to have their items considered for placement on H-E-B shelves. Interested food and beverage (non-alcoholic) suppliers will have a chance to use our online portal to submit their exciting products and creative ideas beginning on February 27, 2019. Through the contest, each participant’s product will be reviewed by a member of our sourcing team who will be working to narrow the contestant pool to the top 20 finalists. That group will then meet with a panel of judges (including H-E-B- senior leadership) where they can sample their products as well as talk about what makes their product unique and worthy on being on H-E-B shelves. From that group of 20, four overall winners are selected and are given a monetary prize. The monetary prize aside, contestants who are part of the top 20 and many who just simply submit an application and participate in the competition, have their products on H-E-B shelves today. The meeting will provide attendees the opportunity to learn more about the H-E-B Quest for Texas Best and ask questions.
